Photoallergic/phototoxic eczema

Abnormal response to UV light radiation may present as photoallergic or phototoxic dermatitis/ eczema. Causal therapy is the immediate removal of the phototoxic/ photoallergic substance or drug and the temporary avoidance of UV light radiation. Topical corticosteroids are used for treating localised forms. In severe ones, though, also depending on the extent of the affected skin, systemic corticosteroids may additionally be required. In case of photoallergic contact dermatitis, photopatch testing for identification of the causal allergen is needed after an adequate time interval ( minimum 6 weeks) to glucocorticosteroid treatment and clearing of lesions.
